Going global: The Guardian newspaper announces a new ‘.com’ domain for its UK, US and Australian websites

the guardian by gigijin 520x245 Going global: The Guardian newspaper announces a new ‘.com’ domain for its UK, US and Australian websites

British national daily newspaper The Guardian has unveiled plans to create a new global online identity, one that will serve as a home for its various digital properties around the world.

The Guardian’s publisher, Guardian News & Media, announced it is to introduce a single portal on TheGuardian.com, which will host Guardian.co.uk, GuardianNews.com – which launched for the US market back in 2011 – and its upcoming Australian edition, which is scheduled to go live later this year.

The Guardian was founded in 1821, but it was known as ‘The Manchester Guardian’ until 1959. Although it was slightly behind other publications in terms of launching an online presence, Guardian.co.uk finally landed in January 1999. This online portal hosted the whole Guardian Unlimited network of sites, which included News Unlimited, Football Unlimited, Cricket Unlimited and Jobs Unlimited. Later additions to the network include Film Unlimited, Education, Books, Shopping and Money.

Then, in 2008, the Guardian Unlimited brand was replaced simply by Guardian.co.uk, which also served as the domain for its Sunday title The Observer.

Tanya Cordrey, Chief Digital Officer at Guardian News & Media, made the announcement off the back of another record month for Guardian.co.uk, with ABC figures showing it secured 81 million uniquer browsers in April. This was the third straight record-traffic month for the publication.

It seems the Guardian is looking to adapt its online model to mirror something like UK tabloid The Daily Mail, which operates MailOnline – a single-identity .co.uk website that lays claim to being the world’s highest-trafficed newspaper website. That’s not to say it will be looking to replicate the Daily Mail’s content, however, but it will be interesting to see how a new global identity will reflect the kinds of stories it publishes.

Going global

Though the Guardian is primarily a UK newspaper, only a third of its online visitors are now based in the UK which is why it’s looking to capitalize on its international presence. Indeed, it’s an easy-win for a publication looking to increase click-through-rates (CTRs) – there’s an online population of billions, but only 60 million in the UK.

“This may be a small URL change but it marks a big step for the Guardian and reflects our evolution from a much-respected national print newspaper based only in the UK – reaching hundreds of thousands of people once a day – to a leading global news and media brand, with offices around the world, and an ever-growing worldwide audience accessing Guardian journalism every minute of every day,” said Cordrey.

“Our move to theguardian.com will only strengthen our global presence and is a loud signal of our status as a leading digital news provider and of the breadth and depth of our content,” she added.

From the Guardian’s perspective, centralizing everything makes a lot of sense in terms of creating a single, simplified brand against which it can attract more advertisers and other commercial opportunities from more countries. That’s the main appeal of a .com domain, but its content will also have to reflect this.

No precise timeframe has been giving for porting all the content over to the new site, but it should all come together by the end of this year.

“Over the coming months ahead of the move, our in-house digital team, working closely with the team at Yoast.com, will be working on this ambitious and challenging project,” continues Cordrey. “The Guardian websites involve millions of URLs and around 15 years’ worth of content, so it will take some time.”

Alibaba ruffles Beijing government feathers as its Taobao online mall launches hospital booking service

142098975 520x245 Alibaba ruffles Beijing government feathers as its Taobao online mall launches hospital booking service

Alibaba-owned Taobao, China’s most influential online retail site, is widely known as a place where one can buy everything and anything under the sun. Now, in cooperation with Guahao.com, a Chinese non-profit, the platform offers a new product – hospital appointments.

According to China Daily, Taobao rolled out a hospital appointment booking service on its website earlier this week. Patients looking to schedule an advance appointment with a doctor can go to life.taobao.com and search for a date, department, local hospital, and doctor. Upon entering personal information into the service, users subsequently receive a text message specifying the exact time and location to pick up their formal appointment ticket.

The service is currently available in 17 provinces and municipalities (including Shanghai), and claims to have partnerships with over 600 hospitals and over 70,000 doctors.

Taobao provides the appointment booking service entirely for free. But pilot programs for payment of registration fees (usually paid on-site) are being rolled out in cooperation with Alipay, Taobao’s sister online-payment platform (both are under the Alibaba umbrella).

Traditionally, Chinese hospitals utilize a line-up-and-take-a-ticket method of booking appointments, but that process has created a huge problem in the country’s health-care infrastructure – appointment scalping. As the status-quo system features minimal oversight, it’s not uncommon for scalpers to buy appointment slots and sell them to patients at inflated prices. Since Taobao’s new service relies on the collection personal information, it imposes an extra hurdle for those looking to profit off an imperfect system.

According to the China Daily, 12 million users booked hospital appointments through Guahao.com. Its integration with Taobao, which has over 500 million users, now puts the platform in a strong position to widen its reach.

Banned in Beijing

The existence of a non-profit providing hospital booking services shouldn’t be too controversial as far as NGOs go in China. However, the incorporation of what is in essence a public good onto Taobao, a privately-owned retail site, has some depressing implications with regard to the efficiency of China’s health care system. Is it really more secure to book an appointment with your cardiologist on a website that sells counterfeit Nike sneakers than at a proper hospital?

Already, the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau has enacted a temporary city-wide ban on the service. Citing the existence of its own city-wide appointment booking platform (www.bjguahao.gov.cn, reportedly in operation since 2011), the department added that no for-profit website, organization, or individual should be involved in the distribution of a public good.

Taobao has accepted Beijing’s ban, but in a statement to the press, emphasized that despite its status as a profit-making entity, it was providing the service for free and with the well-being of the consumers in mind.

Tumblr Axes Its Editorial Team Behind Storyboard On The Way To Profitability

tumblr1 657x245 520x245 Tumblr axes editorial team behind Storyboard on the way to profitability

On Tuesday, Tumblr announced that it was laying off its entire editorial team responsible for its Storyboard service. A year after the company created the team of journalists and editors to help cover it as a “living, breathing community”, founder David Karp said that Tumblr’s experiment had come to an end.

When the group was first assembled, it was going to be led by editor-in-chief Chris Mohney and executive editor Jessica Bennett, who came over from The Daily Beast. The idea would be that Storyboard would be about user-generated content on Tumblr, as well as the users themselves. Bennett herself tweeted just recently about her department’s demise:

The surprising move comes a month after Bloomberg reported that Tumblr expected to achieve profitability this year. According to the company’s head of sales Lee Brown, “We expect that the monetization will lead us to profitability this year.” Most of its revenue would come from paid post promotion on Tumblr’s mobile apps, which ranks as the 50th most-used iPhone app in the US.

The company has stated previously that it had $13 million in revenue in 2012 and hoped to increase that astronomically to $100 million this year, an increase of 769 percent.

As Karp says in his post:

After hundreds of stories and videos, features by publishers ranging from Time to MTV to WNYC — not to mention a nomination for a James Beard Award and entries into this year’s NY Press Club Awards — we couldn’t be happier with our team’s effort. And as Tumblr continues to evolve, we’ll always be experimenting with new ways to shine light on our creators.

No word yet on where any of the team members are going.

Jagger can teach you about parenting

Mick Jagger knows a thing or two about parenting.

Mick Jagger knows a thing or two about parenting.

San Diego (CNN) — Here are six words I thought I’d never hear myself say: “I can relate to Mick Jagger.”

You might think that there wouldn’t be much common ground between a 69-year-old British rock ‘n’ roll icon and a 45-year-old Mexican-American columnist. But there is. Apparently, our philosophies on raising kids without spoiling them with parental handouts are quite similar.

This information comes courtesy of Jagger’s chatty ex-wife, Jerry Hall. According to the British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail, Hall said she has been pressuring Jagger — unsuccessfully, I might add — to dip into his fortune (estimated at about $300 million) and buy houses for three of his kids who are in their 20s.

Yes, that’s right. I said houses. Not cars or clothes or jet skis.

Hall is going for broke and asking Jagger to purchase houses for the three children — Lizzie, 29, James, 27, and Georgia, 21. The daughters are models, and the son is a musician. The couple has a fourth child, Gabriel, 15, but he still lives at home with his mom.

The way that Jerry sees it, Mick can easily afford the purchase. The multimillionaire reportedly has five homes of his own. So what’s the problem?

The problem, according to the tabloid newspaper, is that Jagger, who is known to be “famously careful with his pennies,” is firmly opposed to these types of “parental housing subsidies.” According to the newspaper, the Jagger thinks that his children have already enjoyed many advantages in life and that setting them up in their own homes will do more harm than good.

Those who know Jagger well — including his oldest daughter, Jade, who is the only child of his marriage to ex-wife Bianca — say that he strongly believes that children ought not think themselves entitled to their parents’ money and that they have to make their own way in life.

Jade, who has her own jewelry store, told the newspaper: “I was never a trust-fund child. Dad’s got a healthy attitude toward work. You have to look after yourself.”

Bravo. Americans really need to hear that message. And not just our kids; all of us should get an earful. At a time when runaway entitlement spending and a national debt of more than $16 trillion threaten the economic future of the United States, the national motto has become “Where’s mine?”

Now more than ever, Americans need to understand that part of being a good parent is teaching their adult children to stand on their own two feet.

As a parent of three young children, I can imagine that this isn’t easy to do. My kids know that I’m an easy mark. And I struggle daily with saying no — or, in some cases, with making them do chores and save their allowances to buy things on their own.

But I understand where Jagger is coming from, and I applaud him. He’s on the right track, and a lot of other people are on the wrong one.

Somewhere, in the vast universe of parenting, we lost our way. We’ve convinced ourselves that loving our kids also means supporting them more than we need to. That is not so. Caring for our children is one thing, but making them dependent on us well into adulthood is another. The former is the sign of a good parent; the latter is a recipe for trouble.

Billionaire Warren Buffet refers to it as the “lottery of the womb” — this sense that some people have that they are entitled to their parents’ money through inheritance or lavish gifts.

In writing about parenting over the years, and talking about it with other parents, I’ve become convinced that a lot of parents with young children worry more that they’re giving their kids too much rather than too little. The concern is that in trying to keep their kids from struggling, they’re making their lives too comfy. At the very least, most of us are probably giving our kids much more than what we were given by our parents when we were growing up. We need to ask: What harm is this doing?

These days, when you’re raising kids, materialism doesn’t merely knock on your door. It busts through. Ten-year-olds are asking for cell phones.

When our kids want something and ask us for it, we might ask ourselves three questions: Is it a good price? Can we afford it? Do they deserve it?

But those are the wrong questions. We need ask ourselves only one question: Will buying my child this item teach him positive values or negative ones?

You see, it doesn’t matter how much money Mick Jagger has or what he can afford. That is not the issue. The issue is that he’s trying to teach his children some values, something that isn’t always easy to do when you’re one of the megawealthy.

Like the saying goes, you want to leave your kids enough money so they can do something with their lives — but not so much that they can do nothing.
