Powerball jackpot closing in on another record

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Less than 10 months after three tickets split a world-record lottery prize, the jackpot for Saturday’s Powerball drawing was nearing historic territory once again.

Should nobody pick the correct six numbers, the prize money will roll over to next week’s drawing and almost certainly eclipse the $656 million doled out to winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland in the Mega Millions game in March 2012.

But the record could fall Saturday night too if a flurry of last-minute ticket purchases pushes the jackpot much above its current $600 million level. Since the previous drawing on Wednesday, it had grown by at least $236 million.

“If there was no chance, you wouldn’t do it,” said New Jersey attorney Rubin Sinins, who represented five construction workers who claimed a colleague cheated them out of a share of a multimillion-dollar lottery jackpot.

It seems simple enough: Just correctly pick five white balls out of a drum of 59 and one red one out of a drum of 35.

However, the odds of a single $2 ticket hitting the correct combination are about 1 in 175.2 million. That’s slightly less likely than randomly drawing the name of one specific female in the United States: 1 in 157 million, according to the last census.

With such an astronomic payoff available for the lucky ticket holder, some buyers are content to settle for just a share of the winnings.

In Houston, city firefighter John Paetow and a dozen of his colleagues kicked in $10 each for the drawing, as they do occasionally when a the stakes soar into the lottery stratosphere.

“With firemen it’s a camaraderie thing,” said Paetow, 59. “It just makes sense to pool our money; it buys more tickets, gives us a better chance of winning.”

Even if Saturday’s drawing doesn’t top last year’s Mega Millions jackpot, it’s already the highest in Powerball history, surpassing that game’s $587.5 million record set in November 2012.

A major reason for the sales surge is that last month, Powerball landed the nation’s most populous state as California joined 42 others that offer the game. California lottery director Robert O’Neill said the state had brought “sunshine and good fortune” to Powerball.

The Multi-State Lottery Association conducts the drawing live Saturday night from Tallahassee, Fla. The balls are weighed and X-rayed, and there are practice runs before the official televised version.

Powerball jackpot quickly jumps to $550 million

Buy AP Photo Reprints

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Powerball jackpot jumped to $550 million on Thursday — the third largest lottery in history — as dreamers in all but the seven states where the game isn’t played snatched up tickets for the minuscule chance at a life on easy street.

Thursday’s announcement by the Iowa-based Multi-State Lottery Association means ticket sales have soared since Wednesday night’s drawing for an estimated $360 million jackpot, in which no one picked all six numbers correctly.

Sales jumped by $260 million in the days before November’s biggest Powerball jackpot win in history — a prize of $587.5 million. And Iowa Lottery spokeswoman Mary Neubauer said it’s possible that Saturday’s could end up eclipsing that amount.

A $550 million jackpot would be the second largest in Powerball history and the third largest for any lottery.

Lottery officials expect jackpot totals of this size to continue to climb in shorter amounts of time, thanks in part to a game redesign in January 2012 that increased the odds of winning some kind of prize, but also lowered the possible number combinations to win the Powerball.

There’s also “cross-selling” of Powerball and Mega Millions tickets — states being able to sell both Powerball tickets and Mega Millions tickets — that began in January 2010. As a result, large jackpots will continue to surpass all-time jackpot records set years ago, said Neubauer.

“It usually took a handful of months, if not several months, for a jackpot to reach this large amount,” she said. “Now it’s achieving that within a handful of weeks. I think the redesign is achieving exactly what we had wanted it to achieve, which is the bigger, faster-growing jackpot.”

The redesign means players don’t necessarily have to strike big to get lucky. A $1 increase and new $1 million and $2 million prizes means the odds of winning something have increased. On Wednesday, $1 million prizes were won in 16 states, and $2 million prizes were won in two states.

In fact, more than half of the all-time jackpot records have been reached in the last three years. The top two all-time jackpots — $656 million from a Mega Millions jackpot and $587.5 million from a Powerball jackpot — were achieved in 2012.

The last major jackpot win came when a New Jersey man won a $338.3 million jackpot on March 23. It is now considered the fourth largest Powerball jackpot in history.

Players aren’t complaining about the large sums. Rachel Rand said she just couldn’t help herself and bought several Powerball tickets.

“How can you not play $2?” said the 32-year-old insurance adjustor. “A $10 investment if you win is pretty good.”

Insurance agent Joe Williams, of Middleton, Wis., doesn’t necessarily spend more when the prize is high. But his $4 investment in the quick-pick option means he does spend.

“I know rationally it makes no sense,” he said. “But at the same time, without a ticket, I have zero chance.”

Tom Powers, 52, a janitor from Omaha, Neb., bought several tickets Tuesday from a convenience store. He said he would definitely walk away from work if he won the jackpot, but he’s not sure how he would spend all the winnings.

“It’s really unfathomable the amount of money this is putting out,” Powers said.

ATRIUM SUCCESSFULLY PLACES A EUR350MILLION UNSECURED EUROBOND

-Atrium's first unsecured bond is 3.7 times oversubscribed-

Jersey, 19 April 2013. Atrium European Real Estate Limited (VSE/Euronext:ATRS),
a leading owner, operator and developer of retail real estate and shopping
centres in Central and Eastern Europe, announces that it has successfully
completed the placement of a EUR350million unsecured seven year eurobond (the
"Bond"), maturing in April 2020 bearing a fixed coupon of 4.00% per annum. The
issue price was 99.569%.

The order book for the issue was over EUR1.3billion, representing an
oversubscription of some 3.7 times. The Bond has been placed with a broad range
of institutional debt investors across Europe and confirms the confidence of
investors in Atrium's credit profile.

Both Standard & Poors and Fitch have assigned a BBB- investment grade credit
rating to the Bond, in line with Atrium's own corporate rating.

The proceeds of the issue will strengthen Atrium's liquidity and will be used
for general corporate purposes, including acquisitions, as and when identified,
as well as the refinancing of its existing secured debt.

Commenting on the transaction, Rachel Lavine, Atrium's chief executive, said:
"The success of this issue, which has been heavily oversubscribed, is a real
endorsement of the progress we have made at Atrium and provides us with
substantial financial liquidity to support the Group's growth strategy. It both
builds on the progress we have made, which led to achieving our investment grade
ratings at the end of last year, and enables us to take advantage of the current
low interest rate environment, and the highly active debt capital markets. I am
very pleased with the result."

‘Holy Grail’ baseball card sold for $2.1m

‘Holy Grail’ of baseball cards sold for $2.1 million

By Pauline Kim, CNN

April 6, 2013 — Updated 1705 GMT (0105 HKT)

The winning bid came in at $2,105,770.50.

The winning bid came in at $2,105,770.50.

New York (CNN) — The final bid for a trading card that the National Baseball Hall of Fame calls “the Holy Grail” topped $2.1 million — the highest price ever paid for a baseball card in a public auction.

The 1909 card of Pittsburgh Pirate shortstop Honus Wagner — one of only about 50 in existence — was auctioned off by Goldin Auctions in West Berlin, New Jersey. Bidding started at $500,000 on February 25.

The buyer chose to remain anonymous after the successful bid, but Ken Goldin, owner of Goldin Auctions, told CNN he is “best described as a wealthy individual investor and a baseball fan.”

Goldin said the buyer did not indicate what they planned to do with the card. A total of 15 bids were made for the prized item.

The card is in short supply because Wagner made the American Tobacco Company recall it when he discovered it had made the card without his permission. He didn’t want kids to buy cigarettes, the auction house said.

The card was released as Wagner was on his way to winning his seventh batting title and about to lead the Pirates to their first World Series win. It’s garnered such a place in baseball history that it has its own plaque at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

The winning bid came in at $2,105,770.50, including the buyer’s premium, according to a statement from Goldin Auctions on Saturday.

CNN Money’s Emily Jane Fox contributed to this report.

Rutgers basketball scandal brings down AD Pernetti

(AP) — Rutgers’ coaching scandal spiraled deeper Friday, bringing down the popular athletic director and a school vice president while donors threatened to cut off their contributions to New Jersey’s largest public university.

The day of mounting troubles for the school began with Athletic Director Tim Pernetti resigning over his failure to immediately fire coach Mike Rice, who was caught on video hitting, kicking and taunting players with anti-gay slurs at practice.

The video was shown Tuesday on ESPN, prompting outrage nationwide and on campus, where the coach’s conduct was especially sensitive because of the 2010 suicide of a student who killed himself after his roommate used a webcam to record him kissing another man.

Rice was fired by Pernetti on Wednesday, but the athletic director immediately came under criticism for only suspending and fining the coach after the video was brought to his attention four months ago. Pernetti said Friday he wanted to fire Rice on the spot but did not because the consensus among school officials at the time was that it didn’t warrant dismissal.

Rutgers President Robert Barchi came under harsh questioning from reporters at a news conference Friday over what he knew about the video months ago, but he got a nod of support from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and the school’s board or governors.

Barchi, who took office in September 2012, said he first saw the video only this week, but was aware it existed in late November when Pernetti gave him a summary of what was on it at the time.

“This was a failure of process. I regret that I did not ask to see this video when Tim first told me of its existence,” Barchi said. “I want to apologize to the entire Rutgers community for the negative impact that this situation has had on Rutgers.

“I also apologize to the LGBT community and all of us who share their values for the homophobic slurs shown on that video. I personally know how hurtful that language can be.”

Based on the information he received from Pernetti, Barchi said he “agreed with and supported his recommendation to suspend, rather than fire, coach Rice at that time. It was not until Tuesday evening of this week, when I watched the video, that I had the opportunity to witness personally for the first time what Tim had seen last fall.

“I was deeply disturbed by the behavior that the video revealed, which was much more abusive and pervasive than I had understood it to be. As Tim acknowledged on Wednesday, his decision to rehabilitate, rather than fire, coach Rice was wrong.”

Barchi said the school hopes to appoint an interim athletic director in a few days but he admitted he had no idea whether that person would come from inside or outside the university.

The 42-year-old Pernetti is a Rutgers graduate who played tight end for the Scarlet Knights from 1989-93.

Pernetti said in his resignation letter to Barchi that “my first instincts when I saw the videotape of Coach Rice’s behavior was to fire him immediately. However, Rutgers decided to follow a process involving university lawyers, human resources professionals, and outside counsel.”

“Following review of the independent investigative report, the consensus was that university policy would not justify dismissal. I have admitted my role in, and regret for, that decision, and wish that I had the opportunity to go back and override it for the sake of everyone involved,” it said.

Pernetti enjoys some popularity among Rutgers alumni and donors, especially after he helped the school move to the Big Ten Conference, which means millions in additional revenue from TV contracts and more national exposure, especially in football. The move, which becomes official in 2014, should provide a big boost to the program in recruiting and season ticket sales. The Scarlet Knights will continue to play next season in the Big East.

Two of Rutgers’ leading donors have threatened to cut their contributions in the wake of Pernetti’s resignation.

Tom Mendiburu, whose High Point Solutions paid $6 million for the naming rights to the university’s football stadium, tweeted that he was concerned because he made the deal because of Pernetti.

“We’ve invested so much into (hash)RU and now I’m not even sure who we turn to. Very sad day and I’m sorry Pernetti had to go through this,” he tweeted.

Mendiburu said a lot of people are asking him what he is going to do and he wasn’t sure.

The Star-Ledger of Newark reported that Daniel Wheeler, a founding member of the Society of Queens College, where membership requires a minimum of $1 million donated over a lifetime, was upset Rutgers ignored prominent donors’ pleas to keep Pernetti.

“I won’t say numbers, but I’ve given over seven figures, and like a lot of people who have done the same, I support Tim Pernetti,” Wheeler told the newspaper.

Pernetti, who hired Rice in 2010, viewed him as the man who could turn the perennially underachieving program around. But Rice went 44-51 in three years and posted a 16-38 mark in the Big East. The Scarlet Knights went 15-16 this season, including 5-13 in the league. They have not been to the NCAA tournament since 1991.

Barchi said Rice was not fired for cause. Under his contract, that means he’s owed just over $1 million for the next two years at 75 percent of his contract amount, plus another $100,000 for completing the 2012-13 season as coach.

Also resigning was John B. Wolf, Rutgers’ interim senior vice president and general counsel, who is believed to have recommended against firing Rice in December over the video. On Thursday, the school said assistant coach Jimmy Martelli had resigned.

Pernetti was given the video by a former employee, Eric Murdock, and the decision was made in December to suspend Rice for three games, fine and dock him pay totaling $75,000 and order him to attend anger management classes.

Murdock filed a whistleblower lawsuit Friday, alleging Rutgers violated the state’s employee protection act and his contract. He said he wrote to the university in July about Rice’s “unlawful conduct,” and gave the university the video in November.

“Despite having been in possession of such video footage, the university and its representatives inexplicably chose to ignore Defendant Rice’s unlawful conduct,” the lawsuit said.

Rutgers officials, including Barchi, declined to comment about the lawsuit.

Murdock, who played in the NBA for nine seasons, was the director of player of development for the program. His contract wasn’t renewed in July.

He said he was let go after a dispute with Rice about skipping the coach’s youth basketball camp and, ultimately, because he complained to university officials about Rice’s mistreatment of players.

Murdock claims the school violated state anti-bullying law and a Rutgers policy put in place after the 2010 suicide of student Tyler Clementi after learning his roommate had used the webcam to watch him kiss another man.

“Despite their obligations under New Jersey law and the university’s own policy, neither the presidents of the university, the athletic director nor any other university representatives took any steps to assure that the rights of the student-athlete members of the men’s basketball program were protected from assault (both physical and verbal), battery, harassment, intimidation, bullying, defamation and other unlawful conduct,” the lawsuit states.

Despite the latest resignations and the growing troubles for Rutgers, Barchi got votes of confidence Friday.

In a statement, Christie commended Barchi “for his decisive leadership in coming to an agreement with Mr. Pernetti to have the athletic department of Rutgers University come under new leadership,” he said. “This entire incident was regrettable and while it has damaged the reputation of our state university, we need to move forward now on a number of fronts which provide great opportunities for Rutgers’ future.”

Ralph Izzo, chairman of the school’s board of governors, called Barchi “the right person to run this place for many years to come.”

“Dr. Barchi was brought on here eight months ago with two primary objectives: No. 1 was to build a strategic plan for this university for 10 years, going forward, to lead us to academic success and academic greatness; and No. 2, an enormous challenge of integrating a medical school with this university. Being on the job two months, hearing from a general counsel and the athletic director that there was a serious problem, I think he did the right thing by acquiescing to that advice at the time.”

(CNN) — Rutgers University fired head basketball coach Mike Rice on Wednesday after ESPN broadcast a video showing him physically and verbally abusing players.

The video, which ESPN said features excerpts of practice sessions shot between 2010 and 2012, initially had earned Rice a three-game suspension, a $75,000 fine and a ticket to anger management classes.

“You f**king fairy … you’re a f**king fa**ot,” Rice appears to say during one session depicted on the video, which also shows him shoving and throwing basketballs at players.

Under pressure from incensed state officials to take stronger action, Athletic Director Tim Pernetti said Wednesday that he had made a mistake in favoring suspension.

“I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice,” Pernetti said in a written statement. “Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.”

Gov. Chris Christie, who a spokesman had said was “deeply disturbed” by the video, said Wednesday he supports Rice’s firing.

“This was a regrettable episode for the university, but I completely support the decision to remove Coach Rice. It was the right and necessary action to take in light of the conduct displayed on the videotape,” he said.

Rutgers President Robert L. Barchi said he had agreed last year with an outside investigator’s recommendation that Rice be suspended, fined and sent to anger management classes.

Barchi, who apparently did not review the video at the time, said he concluded Tuesday after viewing it that it showed a “chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behavior.”

“I have now reached the conclusion that Coach Rice cannot continue to serve effectively in a position that demands the highest levels of leadership, responsibility and public accountability,” Barchi said. “He cannot continue to coach at Rutgers University.”

Rice said Wednesday after he was fired that “there’s no explanation for what’s on those videos because there’s no excuse for it,” according to CNN affiliate WABC.

“I can’t say anything right now except I’m sorry, and there will never be a time where I’m going to use any of that as an excuse or will there be any excuse,” he said, according to the station. “I’ve let so many people down, my players, my administration, Rutgers University, the fans, my family — who’s sitting in their house, just huddled around because of the fact that their father was an embarrassment to them.”

Coach is seen and heard abusing team

‘Total shock’

ESPN got the video from former NBA player Eric Murdock, the team’s former player development director. He told the network the school fired him for blowing the whistle on Rice. The school says he was let go for “insubordinate conduct” unrelated to the video, according to ESPN.

In the video, Rice is shown several times throwing basketballs at flinching players, shoving one in the back, kicking at another. He frequently berates players in the clips.

“To see your coach physically putting his hands on players, physically kicking players, firing balls at players from point-blank range, the verbal abuse, the belittling, I was in total shock that this guy wasn’t fired, immediately on the spot,” Murdock told ESPN.

But Frank Mitchell, who played at Rutgers under Rice, told CNN what’s in the video wasn’t the norm at practices.

“From time to time, there’s some instances of throwing balls or physically making contact with players, but it only occurred from time to time, it wasn’t an everyday type thing,” he told CNN. “Obviously, the video shows it happened, but they were isolated incidents. They weren’t back to back.”

‘Not acceptable’

Efforts by CNN to reach Rice and Pernetti on Wednesday were unsuccessful. But Pernetti previously told CNN affiliate News 12 New Jersey that Rice’s conduct was “unacceptable and is not to the Rutgers standard.”

“That’s why we handed out the significant amount of suspension that we did and all the things that came along with that,” he said.

“I think it will affect Mike Rice wherever he goes,” Pernetti told the station Tuesday. “It certainly affects his tenure. We’re trying to do everything we can to support him. But we also had to penalize him within the process too because there are certain words that are said and actions that are taken that are not acceptable no matter who you are and where you work and certainly not Rutgers.”

On Twitter, the decision to fire Rutgers seemed widely regarded as too little, too late.

“I always find it really admirable when someone can do the right thing when everyone is looking,” Twitter user @adamcox wrote.

“My question is why wasn’t he dismissed last year,” wrote @TheQueez.

Similar incident

The video recalled the 2000 sacking of legendary Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight in the aftermath of a videotaped incident in which he put his hand to the throat of a player. While it was another incident that finally led to Knight’s firing, it was the videotaped 1997 incident that prompted strict limits on the coach’s frequent physical and verbal outbursts and set the stage for Indiana to let him go.

It also sparked discussion about how far coaches should go to motivate players, what message such behavior sends to young athletes and how widespread such behavior is in locker rooms and practice facilities.

“Homophobic slurs? The sensitivity of people these days is amazing,” one commenter wrote on CNN.com.

But the majority of commenters appeared to be aligned against the coach. Many called Rice a bully.

“If you did this to your OWN child the state would take them from you!” another commenter wrote.

“What I think is stark here is how we can be surprised, at this point, by this,” former NBA player John Amaechi said on CNN’s “Starting Point” Wednesday. “You can walk on any sideline almost anywhere in America or Britain, on any given weekend, and see similar behaviors.”

Amaechi, a former NBA player who acknowledged he was gay in a 2007 book, called such conduct abusive, and said Rice should be fired.

“There is no context in the universe where that kind of behavior is acceptable. It’s physical and verbal abuse. It’s psychological and emotional abuse,” he said. “He should not be allowed near anybody. I mean forget sports, there is no context where his management style is appropriate.”

But, he said, such demeaning language is not uncommon in sports. Nor is a coach like Rice rare, Amaechi said.

“He’s just rarely exposed,” he said.

Rice had just ended his third year as the Scarlet Knights’ coach with a record of 44-51, and was under contract through the 2014-2015 season. He came to Rutgers from Robert Morris University, where he had a 73-31 record, taking the team to the NCAA basketball tournament twice.

Rice’s official school bio — which has since been taken down — lauded the academic success of his players and credited him for working extensively with cancer and children’s charities. The biography also noted “a relentless style that has become his trademark.”

His 2012 salary was $655,470.55, including $300,000 in base pay, according to News 12 New Jersey, which cited public records.

CNN’s Laura Ly and Joe Sterling contributed to this report.
