This is what iOS 7 looks like on the iPad and iPad mini

Apple’s unveiling of iOS 7, the latest version of its hugely successful mobile operating system, at its Worldwide Developer Conference earlier this week triggered a huge debate about the company’s refreshed interface and new design language.

The presentation only looked at the iPhone, however. The iPad and iPad mini, two hugely influential devices for the company, were given little attention in the various demonstrations and slides.

iGen spotted some screenshots (via 9to5Mac) of iOS 7 running on Apple’s small range of high-end tablets at the bottom of the official iOS 7 webpage.

For the most part, it’s exactly what you would expect. Apple hasn’t changed the spacing between the apps or the general layout used on the iPad. All of the new app designs are present, however, in addition to Apple’s shiny new wallpaper.

So if you were worried about what iOS 7 might look like on the iPad – or just curious to see what Apple had planned – your prayers have now been answered. We can only presume that all of iOS 7′s new functionality – the revamped lock screen, multitasking and control panel that slides up from the bottom, among a whole range of reimagined apps – will also be in full effect here.

Website-backup service Dropmysite launches new tool for firms to track employee email usage

Companies that have always wondered how employees use their work email accounts can now track all official communications going in and out of the company with a new tool launched by email back-up service Dropmyemail.

Singapore-based website and email back-up company Dropmysite, which is known best for its largest service Dropmyemail, is opening its latest product exclusively to Dropmyemail Business customers for free. The business arm of Dropmyemail is targeted at small business and enterprise users rather than consumers.

The tool, called “Email Insights”, will allow managers to identify all employees’ contacts, sieve out corporate communications versus personal emails, measure how much email has been sent and received to gauge the effectiveness of communication, and filter through emails to find specific conversations.

John Fearon, the CEO and founder of Dropmysite, says: “SMEs and MNCs alike will now have the ability to quickly sort through their email usage and act swiftly to address issues that would have been previously undetected.”

In other words, employees should be afraid (or rather, much more careful) – as anything they use their work email accounts for could get recorded and sent to their managers.

However, there is no need to fear a PRISM-like intrusion of privacy. The aim of this tool is to prevent incidents such as leaking of official information or loss of records. Peter Yu, the publicist for Dropmysite, says the administrators can only monitor official emails and can’t access personal emails at all.

“The only relevance to personal emails is when an employee is sending numerous emails to his, her or other private addresses which is a sign of possible data leakage,” he says.

Dropmysite adds that it is further developing algorithms to sort through emails that can predict fraud, spot data leakage, employee dissatisfaction, unauthorized access and more.

Two months ago, the startup landed a $250,000 investment from US accelerator 500 Startups, following an upgrade in design and functionality to its Dropmysite service. A deal with GMO Cloud in Japan early this year also saw it clinch a six-figure investment.

Chrome 28 beta for Android is out: Google Translate built-in, fullscreen on tablets, new error pages, and more

Just a day after launching the stable version of Chrome 27 for Android, Google has announced the release of Chrome 28 beta for Android. Among the new features a built-in Google Translate bar, fullscreen support on tablets, and new mobile-friendly error pages.

You can download version 28.0.1500.21 right now directly from Google Play. Remember: since this is a beta release, you won’t find it via the store’s search function; you’ll need to use the link.

The biggest addition here is undoubtedly Google Translate support. When you come across a page written in a language that isn’t in the same language as your phone or tablet, just tap the “Translate” button:

For those that use Chrome on the desktop, this is the same built-in translation bar you’re already used to. Now you can use it while you’re on the go to quickly skim a web page you otherwise wouldn’t understand.

Next up is fullscreen support on tablets: as you scroll, the top toolbar disappears so you can see more web page content. Now that the feature was added for phones in Chrome 27 for Android, Google is moving on, also adding in a “+” in the toolbar for creating tabs.

Last but certainly not least, Google is still experimenting with the data savings feature it introduced in Chrome 26 beta. As of Chrome 27 beta, you no longer need to enable it under chrome://flags and can see your data savings by just going to “Bandwidth Management” in Settings and enabling “Reduce Data Usage.” In Chrome 28 beta, you’ll also get a spiffy graph that shows your estimated bandwidth savings:

For reference, here’s the official Chrome 27 beta for Android changelog:

  • Google Translate: When you come across a page written in a language that isn’t in the same language as your phone or tablet, look for the translation bar.
  • Fullscreen on tablets: Simply scroll the page to dismiss the toolbar.
  • Support for fullscreen API.
  • New graph showing your estimated bandwidth savings when you use the experimental data compression feature.
  • Mobile friendly error pages.

Chrome 28 could arrive as soon as June, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it was pushed back to July. This is a big release for Google, as it will be the first to ship with Blink instead of WebKit.

More to follow.

(AP) — A British government official says both suspects in the brutal killing of a solider were part of previous security services investigations for possible terror links.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the investigation, said he could not provide other details because the suspects may face trial.

Investigations by Britain’s domestic security service, MI5, can include undercover surveillance, phone tapping and communications intercepts.

thankyou 520x245 Google Translate sails past 70 languages with the addition of Bosnian, Javanese and more

Chances are if you use the Internet, you’ve used Google Translate at least once in your life. And from today, Google is opening the technology to potentially an additional 183m people, as it opens to five more languages.

Bosnian, the official language of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been added alongside Cebuano (Philippines), Hmong (China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and the US), Javanese (second most-spoken language in Indonesia), and Marathi (India).

Just a few weeks ago, Google added Khmer, the official language of Cambodia, to its online translation technology, which represented its 66th language.

While Bosnian constitutes a ‘full’ launch, the other four tongues are being classed as in ‘alpha’, meaning there may be more inaccuracies than usual.

Iran condemns Israeli airstrike in Syria

This photo released on the official Facebook page of Syrian President Bashar Assad, shows Syrian president Bashar Assad, right, surrounded by bodyguards as young people, wave at him during the inauguration ceremony on Saturday of a statue dedicated to “martyrs” from Syrian universities who died in the country’s two-year-old uprising and civil war, in Damascus, Syria, Saturday, May. 4, 2013. Assad’s second public appearance in a week came as Israeli officials confirmed the country’s air force carried out a strike against Syria, saying it targeted a shipment of advanced missiles bound for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. (AP) — Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman is condemning an Israeli airstrike in Syria on a shipment of Iranian-made missiles, but gives no other hints of a possible stronger response from Tehran or its allies.

Ramin Mehmanparast is quoted Sunday by the semiofficial Fars news agency as denouncing the attack on the missiles, which were believed en route to Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon. It’s the first Iranian comments since Israel launched a first round of airstrikes on Friday, then another round on Sunday.

Mehmanparast urges countries in the region to remain united against Israel, but gives no other suggestions of possible further action in response.

The attack signals a sharp escalation of Israel’s involvement in Syria’s more than 2-year-old civil war between rebels and the forces of President Bashar Assad, a key Iranian ally.
