STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Authorities are negotiating with escaped inmate Dany Provencal
  • Benjamin Hudon-Barbeau, another inmate, is arrested, along with two other people
  • The inmates escaped from a Quebec prison in a helicopter

(CNN) — Canadian police arrested three people Sunday in connection with a daring helicopter escape from a Quebec prison.

Benjamin Hudon-Barbeau, one of two escaped inmates is in custody, along with two other people, said Quebec provincial police spokesman Benoit Richard.

Dany Provencal, the second inmate, is “surrounded,” and authorities are negotiating to bring him in peacefully, he said.

“I can tell you one thing: The two people that were inside the jail needed help to get out,” Richard told CNN.

The spokesman declined to identify the other two people arrested. He also declined to say where the arrests took place, under what circumstances, or where Provencal was located.

The three people arrested will appear in court Monday morning.

The escape happened at around 2:20 p.m. ET Sunday at a prison in Saint-Jerome, northwest of Montreal.

The pilot was taken to a hospital for examination and will be interviewed by investigators, Richard said. He did not know whether the pilot had been injured and declined to speculate on news reports that said the inmates held a gun to the pilot’s head, forcing him to fly.

Richard told CNN the pilot is considered a witness, not a suspect.

Hudon-Barbeau was cleared on appeal of a double murder, but returned to prison in connection with an attempted murder investigation, the spokesman said. He said he did not know what Provencal was convicted of.

Christa McGregor, spokeswoman for the Correctional Service of Canada, said Provencal was serving a federal sentence of seven years and 10 months for various offenses including arson, break and enter, forcible confinement, unauthorized possession of a firearm, utter threats to cause harm and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

His sentence started in September 2011, she said.

After the escape, a man claiming to be Hudon-Barbeau spoke to a reporter at 98.5 FM in Montreal, by phone.

“I don’t want to cause any harm to anybody. I am not a killer. I never did anything bad to an innocent. I know that (the escape) wasn’t the best thing to do, but I didn’t want to stay in prison anymore. I am ready to die,” the station reported he said.

It also reported that the helicopter involved approached the prison and dropped a cable that allowed the inmates to escape. The helicopter was later found at Mont-Tremblant, also in Quebec.

Once the helicopter landed, Hudon-Barbeau and Provencal are believed to have left in a car. Authorities were looking for that car, but Richard declined to provide a description of it. After the arrests, he said he didn’t know whether the vehicle had been found.

Officials were doing a headcount at the prison to make sure that no one else was unaccounted for, the spokesman said.

CNN’s Susan Candiotti and Ross Levitt reported from New York. Dana Ford wrote this report from Atlanta. CNN’s Paula Newton and Alexander Hunter also contributed to this report.

(AP) — Two Quebec inmates climbed up a rope into a hovering helicopter to make a daring daylight escape Sunday from a jail northwest of Montreal, authorities said.

Quebec provincial police said later Sunday that they had arrested three people about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the Saint-Jerome jail from which the two inmates escaped. Police said an operation was under way in Chertsey, Quebec, but did not specify who was arrested.

Earlier Sunday, police received a call from the staff at the Saint-Jerome jail, reporting the escape around 2:20 p.m., said Quebec provincial police Sgt. Benoit Richard.

The jail’s warden told police that two inmates, identified as 36-year-old Benjamin Hudon-Barbeau and 33-year-old Danny Provencal, had grabbed a rope dropped from the helicopter to make their getaway, Richard said.

Quebec provincial police tracked down the helicopter used in the escape on Sunday afternoon to Mont-Tremblant, about 53 miles (85 kilometers) away from the jail but only the chopper’s pilot was still at the scene. The pilot was taken to a local hospital, Richard said.

“He’s going to be questioned later on by investigators, within the next couple of hours,” Richard said, adding that it’s too early to say what the pilot’s role was in the escape.

A Montreal radio station, 98.5 FM, said it received a call Sunday from a man claiming to be Hudon-Barbeau, who said he was “ready to die” as he tried to evade police.

The Saint-Jerome jail, located about 37 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of Montreal, experienced a mini-riot by about a dozen prisoners a little over a month ago.

In that incident, police were called in to secure the outside of the jail, which holds about 480 inmates, and the jail’s staff used pepper spray to disperse the mob.

(AP) — Plans for Saudi Arabia to send women to the Olympics for the first time appear to be in jeopardy.

Saudi Arabian newspaper Al-Watan reported Thursday that Saudi Olympic Committee President Prince Nawaf does “not approve” of sending female athletes to the London Games. But he left room for Saudi women to possibly compete on their own outside the official delegation, a plan that may not satisfy demands by the International Olympic Committee.

A similar arrangement was made at the Youth Olympics in 2010 for Saudi equestrian competitor Dalma Rushdi Malhas. She won a bronze medal in show jumping.

“I do not approve of Saudi female participation in the Olympics at the moment,” Nawaf was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Officials at the Saudi Olympic Committee could not be reached for comment.

The IOC has been in talks with the Saudis about sending women to London.

“We are still in discussion and working to ensure the participation of Saudi women at the games in London,” the IOC told The Associated Press in an email on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia is one of three countries that have never included women on their Olympic teams, along with Qatar and Brunei. The IOC has been hopeful that all three would send female representatives to London, marking the first time for every competing nation.

A formal proposal for the participation of Saudi women had been scheduled to be submitted to the IOC executive board at its meeting in Quebec City from May 23-25.

Canada’s BCE to acquire Astral Media for C$3 bln

Fri Mar 16, 2012 1:32pm GMT

(Adds details on deal, background)

TORONTO, March 16 (Reuters) – BCE Inc (BCE.TO), parent
of Bell Canada, has agreed to acquire its smaller rival Astral
Media (ACMa.TO) for C$3 billion, as seeks to expand its presence
in broadcasting and strengthen its position in the mostly
francophone province of Quebec.

BCE said on Thursday it would acquire all Class A non-voting
shares of Astral for $50 per share, a 38 percent premium to
Thursday’s close on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

“Bell’s acquisition of Astral firmly establishes our company
as Qubec’s media leader,” BCE CEO George Cope said in a
statement. “Astral’s strong financial position enables Bell to
further accelerate our significant investment in broadband
innovation across Qubec.”

BCE will also acquire all Class B subordinate voting shares
for C$54.83 per share, for a total consideration of about C$151
million, and all special shares for C$50 million. Including the
assumption of debt, the deal values Astral at about C$3.38
billion.

BCE will fund the deal through a combination of cash and
BCE common equity, with BCE retaining the right to replace
shares with cash, in whole or in part, at closing.

A year ago, Canadian regulators approved BCE’s acquisition
of broadcaster CTV for C$1.3 billion. The BCE-CTV deal was
reached in September 2010.

Astral’s board of directors has unanimously approved the
transaction and advised Astral shareholders to vote in favor of
the deal.

This incredible PR stunt was used to promote Canadian-based app “Pothole Season”

TAXI, a multi-disciplinary studio based out of Toronto, created an app and site known to Canadian drivers as Pothole Season. The app & site allows anyone to report potholes and get directions to places while them along the way. So far over 2,615 potholes have been reported using the app.

But as well as the app is designed (trust me, it’s slick), the topic isn’t exactly thrilling. On top of that, whenever I hit a pothole, I prefer to swear, curse and then move on — instead of actually reporting problems to the city or other drivers.

Brilliant as the agency is, PaperPlane, a street and guérilla marketing blog reports that the TAXI team has created a blunt, yet completely original PR stunt to draw attention to the app. The message here was to encourage drivers to use the app, or else the following just might happen to you. And as you can see below, the results were rather awesome:

In Quebec, spring heralds the return of good weather, but also heralds the return of nest-holes. This phenomenon of the passage of the rigorous Canadian winters creates many difficulties for motorists. In order to simplify their lives, the agency Taxi has developed a digital tool available in the form of iPhone application and website for identifying all those holes in the asphalt. To further this commitment and encourage the use of these tools, the agency achieved a PR stunt in the center of the city of Montreal. The idea, simple but perfectly executed, is to stage a car so hyperbolic undergoing a nest-holes.

Hopefully the stunt will help give the app some of the attention it deserves!
