Google buys 10 years of renewable energy to power its Finnish data center with Swedish wind

Google datacenter Hamina Finland 520x245 Google buys 10 years of renewable energy to power its Finnish data center with Swedish wind

You can say a lot about Google, but not that it doesn’t genuinely care about the environment.

Sure, striving to use 100% renewable energy across all its operations is good for the company’s bottom line, too, but Google has certainly gone to great lengths making its data centers as energy-efficient as possible.

The company regularly makes clean tech investments to boot, ranging from solar plants in South Africa and across the US to wind farms.

Today, Google is announcing an agreement with Nordic wind farm developer O2 and German insurance powerhouse Allianz that will see the Internet company purchase a decade worth of of renewable energy in a first-of-its-kind deal for Europe.

Under the terms of the 10-year agreement, Google will buy the entire electricity output of a brand new wind farm, to be built at Maevaara, in Övertorneå and the Pajala municipality (northern Sweden).

The output will be pumped into the grid and serve to power Google’s massive data center, which is, rather amusingly, not located in Sweden but neighbouring country Finland instead (see picture above).

Thanks to the new power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google, O2 has secured 100 percent financing from Allianz for the construction of the new wind farm, which should be fully operational by early 2015.

Construction of the 24 turbine project, which will boast a capacity of 72MW, will begin in the coming months.

In a statement, Google explains how it is able to buy power from an offshore Swedish wind farm to power its Finnish data center:

The agreement takes advantage of Europe’s increasingly integrated electricity market, in particular Scandinavia’s shared electricity market and grid system, Nord Pool.

This enables Google to buy the wind farm’s electricity output in Sweden with Guarantee of Origin certification and consume the same amount of power at its data center in Finland.

Indeed, Nord Pool (Spot) runs the largest market for electrical energy in the world, measured in volume traded (TWh) and in market share. More than 70 percent of the total consumption of electrical energy in the Nordic market is said to be traded through Nord Pool Spot.

Urs Hoelzle, SVP of Technical Infrastructure at Google, adds:

“As a carbon neutral company, we’re always looking for ways to increase the amount of renewable energy we use.

This long term agreement, our fourth globally, means we can power our Finnish data center with clean energy – and add new wind generation capacity to the European grid.”

Doo for Android gives you access to documents stored in the cloud – just don’t expect to edit them

doofeat 520x245 Doo for Android gives you access to documents stored in the cloud just don’t expect to edit them

File management and search solution doo has launched on Android today as a simple, if somewhat limited way to access documents stored both in the cloud and on a local hard drive.

Doo is already available as an app for Windows 8 and Mac OS X. It can synchronize with any folder stored on a local device, as well as the following cloud-based storage services; Dropbox, Google Drive and Skydrive.

For people who use multiple solutions and want to streamline their workflow, it’s a great way of enabling easy access to important files. Doo automatically extracts relevant information from each document and uses it to create smart tags, which users can then leverage to look up files containing particular words or phrases.

The mobile iteration is markedly different, however.

A confined document reader

Doo for Android takes the desktop experience and scales it down somewhat. For starters, the app is strictly for documents; so images and other file types are immediately off-limits.

The app does pull-in from all of the cloud-based services tied to your existing Doo account. There’s no mechanism for filtering documents by a specific service though, which seems odd given the emphasis on file management.

dooscreens1 Doo for Android gives you access to documents stored in the cloud just don’t expect to edit them

The second major drawback is that doo for Android is a mobile document reader. Everything is stored as a PDF file, which means that there’s no way of making immediate changes and synchronizing it with all of your other cloud-based storage solutions.

Instead, you’ll need to download the file to your Android device, make the changes in another app and find a way to upload it again to your doo account. It works, but feels more than a little arduous and unnecessary.

The search functionality works great, however, and the tag-based system makes it easy to find any document, regardless of how buried it is in your folder hierarchy.

Viewing PDF files is crisp and clean, with a simple double-tap for zooming in and out. Documents can also be downloaded selectively for offline use, helping users to manage their available disc space.

The bottom line

Doo for Android is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Swedish and Portuguese. The company says it is already working on an iOS app, with updates for Mac OS X and Windows 8 in the works.

The Android iteration is robust, but has some serious shortcomings in its current form. We’re hoping that future updates will extend the functionality to match the stellar experience found on the desktop.

Golf: Tiger roars back to top spot

Woods comfortably protected his lead at the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Monday to regain the No. 1 ranking.

Woods comfortably protected his lead at the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Monday to regain the No. 1 ranking.

(CNN) — Nearly two-and-a-half years after losing the title, Tiger Woods reclaimed the world No. 1 golf ranking when winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational tournament on Monday.

The defending champion knew that only victory at Bay Hill would enable him to topple Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy.

With thunder storms having pushed the final round of play in Florida into Monday, the 37-year-old defended the three-shot lead he held at the start of the day to finish 13 under par — two ahead of second-placed Justin Rose.

“It has been a by-product of hard work, patience and getting back to winning golf tournaments,” Woods said of regaining the coveted top spot.

As he tapped into the eighteenth, Woods became only the second golfer in history to win eight PGA titles at the same event — joining the legendary Sam Snead, who achieved his tally at the Greater Greensboro Open (now called the Wyndham Championship).

“I play well here — and that’s as simple as it gets,” Woods replied when asked the secret of his success at Bay Hill.

While Snead needed 27 years to mark up those victories, Woods took just 13 — nearly half the time — to achieve the feat, having also managed to win three other tournaments on seven different occasions.

The American’s form suggests he will be the man to beat at next month’s Masters at Augusta, the first major of the year — with many pundits awaiting his first major since 2008 to consider his comeback complete.

“That’s up to them — that’s their opinion,” said a relaxed Woods after his success. “I am very pleased with the way I am playing — and that’s enough for me.”

The title, on one of his favorite courses, formally caps his return to the summit of golf — which he spectacularly fell off when reports of numerous marital infidelities emerged in late 2009, whereupon he took an indefinite break from the sport.

The following August, his divorce from his Swedish wife of six years, former model Elin Nordegren, who is the mother of his two children, was finalized.

In October 2010, six months after returning to golf with such poor form that he failed to win a single event in a season for the first time since turning professional, Woods lost his world best crown to Englishman Lee Westwood — ending a record run of 281 consecutive weeks at the top (which started in June 2005).

A combination of further poor form, added to injury, meant that a man who had once seemed invincible on the golf course dropped to a barely credible 58th place in November 2011.

But 29 months after losing his crown, Woods is back on top for the eleventh time in his career — capping a fine month for both his game and private life, with the golfer having announced his relationship to skier Lindsey Vonn last week.

He will now start to add to the record 623 weeks he has spent on top of the golfing world, a tally which is nearly double that of his nearest rival, with Australian Greg Norman racking up 331 weeks, while no other player has broken the 100-week barrier.

The 2013 season may be in its infancy but the 14-time major winner has started in irrepressible form, winning three of his five tournaments — after triumphing at Doral earlier this month and at Torrey Pines in January.

His 77th PGA Tour victory also marked his 99th professional tournament win as Woods, who has won the Masters on four occasions, prepares his bid to wear the famous green jacket for the first time since 2005.

Sweden’s Princess Lilian dies at the age of 97

(CNN) — Sweden’s Princess Lilian, the Welsh-born model who lived with her lover Prince Bertil for 30 years before they were married, has died at the age of 97, the Swedish Royal Court said in a statement.

“It is with sorrow that I have learnt that H.R.H. (Her Royal Highness) Princess Lilian is dead,” Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said in a statement.

“A much loved and appreciated member of the royal family has now passed away,” he added.

Born in 1915 in Swansea, Wales, Lilian May Davies was a Vogue model and married to British actor Ivan Craig when she first met Prince Bertil, the current king’s uncle, in 1943.

Then engaged in wartime work making radios for the Royal Navy, she reportedly met Prince Bertil at a cocktail party for her 28th birthday. Reports about their first meeting vary, with some saying they met at a nightclub called Nuthouse while others that they met on the London Underground.

The two soon became lovers and she divorced her husband in 1945.

However, due to Sweden’s strict royal succession rules — which at the time did not permit a contender for the throne to marry a commoner — King Gustav VI Adolph (the current king’s grandfather) would not give his blessing to the union.

Prince Bertil’s two brothers had already renounced their right to the throne by marrying commoners and the only heir, his older brother Crown Prince Gustaf Adolph, died in a plane crash in 1947.

With a strong possibility that Prince Bertil would have to act as Regent to the present King Carl XVI Gustaf, who was less than a year old when his father was killed, the couple did not marry. Instead, they lived together discreetly in a villa in the South of France.

By the time King Carl XVI Gustaf took the throne in 1973, times had changed. He himself was married to a commoner and the couple were finally permitted to marry 33 years after they first met, on December 7, 1976 at Drottningholm Palace Chapel.

Prince Bertil was popular in Sweden where he was dubbed “Prince Charming” by the media for his long romance with Lilian. He died in 1997 aged 84 with Lilian at his bedside.

Princess Lilian remained active in public life until her early 90s, attending the Nobel Prize ceremonies adorned in royal jewels. In 2005, at the age of 91, she stopped attending the ceremony, citing her advanced years.

In 2010, she withdrew from public life suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The couple never had children.

She was the oldest member of the Swedish royal family at the time of her death and, despite the problems that led her to wait more than 30 years to get married, was a fully integrated member of the Swedish Royal family.

Suspected al-Qaida financier arrested in France

Buy AP Photo Reprints

(AP) — French authorities have arrested the Tunisian administrator of an extremist French website who is suspected of playing a key role in financing and recruiting for al-Qaida and other terrorist groups in several countries, the Paris prosecutor’s office said Tuesday.

The announcement was unusually dramatic and public for French authorities, but it did not spell out what evidence has been culled or how much money may have been involved, or provide the man’s name. It is the first publicly announced suspected terrorist arrest since President Francois Hollande took office in May.

The suspect — whom prosecutors described as a “formidable financier of the bloodiest terrorist groups” — was being questioned Tuesday by anti-terrorism judge Marc Trevidic in Paris. The man faces preliminary charges of planning terrorist acts and financing a terrorist enterprise, the prosecutor’s office said.

Prosecutors say he is suspected of acting as a financier and recruiter for an unusually broad range of terrorist groups, including al-Qaida, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (North Africa), Fatah al Islam and the Islamic State of Iraq, among other groups.

The man, born in Tunisia in 1977, was based in the southern French city of Toulon. He was arrested Friday after a yearlong investigation, the prosecutor’s statement said.

Masked agents took part in the raid to arrest him, and an investigating judge in Toulon initially handled the case before it was transferred to national anti-terrorist authorities in Paris, a judicial official in Toulon said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak publicly about ongoing investigations.

The Paris prosecutor cited “serious and concordant evidence” that the suspect sent material from his computer to terrorist groups. It says he played a “central role” in collecting funds for terrorist groups to buy weapons, but did not elaborate on how much money was involved.

Investigators studied thousands of email messages and analyzed a “considerable mass” of data, prosecutors said. They called it an exceptionally advanced example of “the use of the Internet for terrorist ends in the domain of radical Islam.”

France’s Europe-1 radio reported that the suspect’s website was in French but hosted outside France, and that it included an encrypted private messaging function that allowed the suspect to communicate with foreign terrorist groups.

European authorities in countries ranging from Italy to Germany and Spain have made periodic arrests over the last year of suspects accused of al-Qaida-inspired financing or recruiting. But the arrest in France stood out because of officials’ description of the man’s financing capabilities and his alleged work for so many al-Qaida offshoots.

Such detentions are unusual in Europe, said Magnus Ranstorp, a terror expert at the Swedish National Defence College. “Usually it’s one-offs, pretty small fish,” he said. “It is very rare that you will have facilitators who work with so many multiple franchises.”

Ranstorp also said the volume of electronic information seized indicates the suspect didn’t take adequate security precautions. “If what they say is true, a lot of people (who were in contact with the suspect) will now spend more time on their own security than they will on plotting and planning,” Ranstorp said.

French authorities are sometimes criticized for being too zealous in rounding up terrorist suspects and arrests do not always result in convictions. They also are sometimes criticized for not acting fast enough.

That was the case with Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman killed in a standoff with police in March after allegedly killing three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi, and three paratroopers in a rampage in southern France. Those were the country’s worst terrorist attacks since the 1990s.

Authorities later acknowledged that Merah, who espoused radical Islam and had trained in Afghanistan and Pakistan, had been questioned by French intelligence well before the attacks.

Also earlier this year, a French court sentenced an Algerian-born nuclear physicist to five years in prison for his role in plotting terrorism with al-Qaida’s north African wing via online contacts. Adlene Hicheur, a former researcher at Switzerland’s CERN physics laboratory, was convicted of “criminal association with a view to plotting terrorist attacks.”

His defenders say Hicheur was a victim of France’s over-zealous anti-terrorism laws and that he explored ideas on jihadist websites but never took any concrete step toward terrorism.

Spotify overhauls its Android app to add ICS support, new design, increased social and more

Whilst many Spotify users’ focus is on when the company will launch its new iPad application, the Swedish company has today announced that it has completely overhauled its Android application, incorporating support for Ice Cream Sandwich, a complete redesign, more social and other new features.

Spotify says that it’s still a work in progress but has made the app available to its users in the form of a beta download, rolling out its new slide-out navigation, support for users to visit their friends’ profile pages and playlists from their Android device.

Cover art and artist imagery has been given a visual boost too and will be displayed in high resolution, with Spotify also pushing its new related artist view (which the company says is available for the first time in its mobile apps).

If that wasn’t enough, the company says the overhaul hasn’t just affected the look and feel of the app, it is now a lot faster.

Moving on, Spotify will add further new features, including folders and Last FM scrobbling, before the final build is pushed live on Google Play.

The company hasn’t said if it will roll out an updated design for its iPhone application. As for its iPad application, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek can only say it’s coming “soon”.
