Samsung Galaxy Owners Will Get Jay-Z’s New Album For Free 72 Hours Before Its Official Release

If you own a Samsung Galaxy and are a Jay-Z fan, then you will probably be happy to hear that Samsung is giving away one million copies of “Magna Carta Holy Grail” to owners of its flagship smartphone 72 hours before the album’s official debut on July 4. Jay-Z hinted at the endorsement deal on Sunday when he appeared in a TV commercial during Game 5 of the NBA finals, along with Pharrell Williams and producer Rick Rubin. The tagline was “The Next Big Thing”–a teaser for the early release of “Magna Carta Holy Grail” on Galaxy devices. Samsung bought 1 million copies of the album, which is scheduled for release on July 4, to give to Samsung Galaxy owners. The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung paid $5 each for the albums–reaping Jay-Z $5 million for “Magna Carta Holy Grail” before it even goes on sale

Drawing-themed messaging app Cubie introduces carrier billing for Android, as it nears 8m users

Cubie, the drawing-themed mobile messaging app from Taiwan, has taken a big step to monetizing its service after it launched direct carrier billing for mobile payments in more than 40 countries worldwide.

The new payment system allows Android users to buy Cubie’s virtual items – ’stickers’ (aka rich emoticons that are popular in Asia and — yes — include cat GIFs) — from their phone, with the amount added to their prepaid or post-paid phone bill. There’s no change for iOS users since Apple doesn’t support third-party payments.

To date, Android device users that have wanted to buy virtual items have had to do so via Google Play, which requires a credit card. Since credit card adoption is not widespread in many of Cubie’s primary markets in Asia, the new billing system — which is powered by Fortumo, which services Angry Birds-developer Rovio, among others — removes a major hurdle.

It’s already making a difference and helping the company bring in more revenue (and letting users get more expressive with more emoticons), as Cubie’s James Hill tells TNW:

We had one sticker pack released alongside the Fortumo integration release. In one day revenue of this sticker pack from Fortumo by itself was as much as our previous top seller that was only available via Google Play/iOS in a week.

There’s no word on specific revenue numbers, but Cubie is likely to be some way behind Line, which made $58 million in Q1 2013, by virtue of its small user base. Line has accrued more than 150 million downloads to date.

For now, Cubie’s new stickers are available to all users for free for an initial few days, after which they are priced at anything up to $2.50 per pack. Thanks to the Fortumo partnership, paying hard cash for those stickers that you missed out on is easier than ever before.

Cubie is best-known for its Draw Something style approach, but users can also send free messages, location, voice messages and multimedia to both individuals and group chats. In addition, voice calling has been available since May, albeit as a work-in-progress/beta feature.

The service supports 12 languages — including English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), German, French, Thai and Indonesian — and it is crowdsourcing others.

The startup raised $1.1 million from 500 Startups and other investors last year, and was part of 500 Startup’s accelerator program in the US. Hill tells TNW that the service “nearing” 8 million registered users, of which more than half are on Android devices.

The full list of countries where mobile-based payments are supported on Cubie includes: Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Paraguay, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine and the UK.

Opera opens Singapore office to extend its reach in Asia-Pacific and focus on advertising

OPR81335 01 Logo 520x245 Opera opens Singapore office to extend its reach in Asia Pacific and focus on advertising

Norwegian browser software company Opera has opened a regional head office in Singapore today as it seeks to extend its reach in the Asia-Pacific region with a focus on developing its advertising business.

Opera already has a presence in Asia — with offices in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan — but the new Singapore office will be home to its  operator and advertising business, technical support, and marketing activities across the region.

Citing the increasing amount of time people spend online via their mobile phones, and given the large number of mobile-only consumers in Southeast Asian countries (such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam), Opera says the mandate of the new base is working with operators and advertisers to help them reach more mobile Internet users.

Fabrizio Caruso, Opera’s Senior Vice President for Asia will head up the Singapore presence, and he explains: “We plan to use our Singapore office as a hub to fuel the mobile Internet and advertising economy in APAC.”

Opera’s plan isn’t altogether surprising for many reasons. Chiefly because Singapore is widely recognized as a hub for Southeast Asia, it is already home to many international tech firms, including Facebook, Twitter, Google, Airbnb and Uber.

This year Opera consolidated its advertising business after combining the various units it has acquired in recent years to create Opera Mediaworks, a fully-owned subsidiary, that it says is the world’s largest mobile ad platform. More than advertising, Opera is interested in the business of getting new Internet users on to the Web, and few regions are bursting at the seams like Asia.

The company says it has already partnered with 17 mobile operators in Asia to roll out co-branded Opera Mini browsers coupled with data plans, in a bid to bring more people online through their mobile phones.

Earlier this month, Opera also announced a new version of its Opera Mini browser, targeted at the low-end mobile phone sector and that is likely to be among the services that it places greater emphasis on in Asia-Pacific.

With the opening of the Singapore office, Opera now has a total of 17 offices around the world, which house more than 900 employees.

Uber job ads suggest it’s planning to launch in Taiwan, China, Korea and New Zealand next

162507527 520x245 Uber job ads suggest its planning to launch in Taiwan, China, Korea and New Zealand next

Uber is listing a number of new job openings for positions based in Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangalore, and Auckland, suggesting a wider international roll-out of its private car service.

Spotted by SGE (via The Verge), the company is looking for Operations and Logisitics Managers to cover Taiwan, China, Korea and New Zealand, following an official launch in Singapore back in February.

A quick glance at the job posting for Tokyo reads:

Operations & Logistics managers are responsible for continually sourcing, signing up, onboarding and motivating the fleet of drivers who are our partners in a city.

Operations Managers also constantly monitor the fleet of cars on the road at any given point in time, optimizing the quantity of cars, guiding their physical location across the city, based on user demand, and ensuring the highest levels of service.

Uber is yet to confirm its interest in any of these areas – never mind an intended timeframe for the roll-out – but further evidence of the expansion is available on Twitter. The company already appears to have an account setup for Taipei, which follows the same format as that used for its Singapore and other international handles.

Rival service Hailo has expressed an interest in Tokyo, but the industry is yet to see an international service with the userbase and reputation of Uber take a stab at the Asian market.

It could be very early days for Uber, but the sheer scale of the recruitment drive suggests that the company will be taking its latest expansion very seriously. If it can hit most of the major markets early, it stands a good chance of becoming the go-to private car service for users globally.

Yep, Facebook Ads Are Better With Social Context (According To A Salesforce ‘Benchmark’ Report)

Salesforce.com is releasing what it calls The Facebook Ads Benchmark Report, which shows how Facebook ads performed on Salesforce’s social advertising service Social.com. As the name implies, the report’s main purpose is to let businesses see how their ads stack up against the average, so to a certain extent, it’s basically a data dump — and I’ll try to highlight some of the more interesting data in a second. At the same time, since Facebook announced last week that it’s going to be consolidating and eliminating many of its ad units, focusing too much on the granularity of one unit versus another can seem like it misses the bigger picture. In fact, Michael Lazerow, chief marketing officer for the Salesforce Marketing Cloud (and the co-founder of Salesforce-acquired Buddy Media), said there’s a bigger theme emerging, one that will remain relevant as the specific ad units change.

Mobile messaging service LINE opens new office in Taiwan to help grow its international userbase

line 520x245 Mobile messaging service LINE opens new office in Taiwan to help grow its international userbase

LINE, a cross-platform mobile messaging app with more than 160 million registered users, is doubling its efforts in Taiwan by opening a new office and kicking off a fresh recruitment drive in the region.

Cindy Park, Manager of LINE Business Office, was quoted at a promotional event in Taipei by Focus Taiwan: “We have come here to tell Taiwanese users…that we will do our best to meet all users’ needs.”

LINE will be hiring 30 additional employees to work from the new branch, joining over 400 staff already working for the company worldwide.

The expansion should come as no surprise, given that the app passed 16 million users in Taiwan last month. It’s worth noting that the country’s population is estimated at 23.31 million – according to Google as of 2012, anyway – which suggests significant market penetration.

There’s no shortage of mobile messaging apps vying for users’ attention and loyalty though. Skype, WhatsApp and Viber, alongside Facebook Messenger and the newly unveiled Google Hangouts are but a few of the services prevalent in North America and Europe at the moment.

Asia is another market entirely, however, and a lucrative one where LINE continues to grow. The company, headquartered in Japan, announced last month that it had hit 23 million downloads for its portfolio of apps in Indonesia, which include Line messenger, Line Games and Line Camera, among others. The service is now available in 230 countries worldwide.

It faces stiff competition from cross-platform messaging services WeChat and Kakao Talk, which boast a userbase of over 300 million and 90 million respectively. The latter recently launched KakaoHome, a new Android app that shares some resemblance with Facebook Home and crossed the one million download mark just 13 days after launch.

A presentation given to potential customers in Taiwan – and leaked earlier this week – revealed LINE’s new monetization strategies and a renewed push to maximize its revenue streams. Part of this involves official accounts, which companies can use to connect with other users, as well as corporate sticker accounts. Yes, stickers.

The expansion follows pretty impressive financial results for the first quarter of 2013; Line reported revenues of 5.82 billion yen ($58 million USD), up 92 percent from the previous quarter. At least $17 million of that came from stickers alone, so perhaps its new corporate strategy is a smart one after all.
